Announcement | What We Have Accomplished | More Information

Flintridge Foundation has concluded the Conservation program and will no longer be making grants in this program area.

Conservation grants for 2008 have been awarded.

PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
For more than 20 years, the Conservation program has supported the preservation and restoration of native ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest. Our grantmaking has focused on small grassroots organizations whose work benefits watersheds, forests, and native fish in Washington, Oregon, and the Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion of Northern California, as well as the human communities that depend upon them. Of primary interest have been endeavors that bring people together to find solutions to questions of natural resource use and organizations that work collaboratively and whose projects play a key role in strengthening the overall field in which it works.

We have concentrated on the following strategies:

  Science-based Policy
The Science-based Policy strategy relies on defensible scientific analysis to promote stronger protection for watersheds and native forests and fish by improving federal, state, and local environmental regulations and policies.

  Economy and Ecology
The Economy and Ecology strategy supports the efforts of resource-dependent rural communities to redefine their relationship to the natural environment. It supports projects that provide rural economic opportunity and stability through natural resource protection and restoration. Most of the Economy and Ecology groups are place-based organizations that work directly with members of their own community. If the organizations are not based in the community, they work with local organizations to implement projects that have direct benefits to the community.

Our concluding grants supported activities to strengthen the Economy and Ecology field and to promote community-based conservation efforts in rural areas. These contributions included a legacy grant to the Rural Voices for Conservation Coalition (RVCCP), a collaboration of conservation groups, community activists and leaders in the community forestry field. RVCCP promotes "balanced conservation-based approaches to the ecological and economic problems facing the West" and "collaborative, place-based work that recognizes the inextricable link between the long-term health of the land and the well-being of rural communities."

Since 1986, when the Foundation made its first grants, Flintridge has awarded more than $7 million to 63 conservation organizations.

We are honored to have been able to support so many deeply committed organizations and individuals working to ensure the sustainability of natural resources in the Pacific Northwest. The success of these efforts will be critical for native ecosystems and the communities that depend on them for generations to come.
